The Italian profession of dottori commercialisti and esperti contabili is characterised by a deep multi-disciplinarity. Thanks to their university studies, professional traineeship and state examination, Italian professionals, i.e. Commercialisti, gain a wide and in-depth knowledge of the diverse domains of taxation, accounting, assurance, management, finance and corporate legal matters. Especially in the tax area, the Commercialisti provide their services to individual tax payers, businesses, and non-profit sector, focusing on advisory services and assistance in litigation proceedings.

The national body, Consiglio Nazionale dei Dottori Commercialisti e degli Esperti Contabili (CNDCEC), is a public sector entity under the supervision of the Ministry of Justice. CNDCEC represents its members - over 116.000 in 2015 - both at national and international level; it oversees and coordinates the activities of the local professional bodies and issues various regulations and recommendations, including the ethics code. The 143 local bodies monitor, at local level, the conduct of accountants and have disciplinary powers over their members. Moreover, they provide continuing professional education and relevant assessment, in accordance with the CPE Regulation adopted by the National Council.

The board, which is elected every four years, adopts a mandate program, stating the goals and the priorities it intends to promote. Special attention is paid to the interconnections among the international, national, and local dimensions. CNDCEC also aims at playing a key role in the debates on the current regulatory issues impacting the profession. In order to promote research in the areas of special professional, political, and institutional interest, the Board sets up study committees and working groups. Besides covering all areas linked to the numerous and diverse fields of professional activity, CNDCEC places special focus on equal opportunities and on the presence of women in the profession.
